The food does the basics properly. The steak holds its own against anywhere else in the village, the menu handles families and big groups without fuss, and special-occasion menus through the year give the regulars reason to keep showing up. There's a pool table, live music most weekends, and the cheapest pint in Piha — though The Bowler claims the same title, and the running argument between the two is one of the smaller local rivalries.
The "Memorial" in the name matters. A moment of silence is observed at 7pm each evening. Stand for it. It's a small thing, takes less than a minute, and it's the kind of village habit that tells you what kind of place this is.
The current operators are Shannon and Jodie, who took over recently and have kept what was working while quietly improving what wasn't.
